The Philadelphia Neurological Institute (PNI) in Upland, Pa., serves as a space that connect clinicians, patients, and industry partners for care delivery and research. The project purposely integrates a “hub” where patients, care givers, family members, and researchers are brought together for collaboration and idea sharing. This space overtly ensures more frequent interaction between disciplines.

Slated to open in 2023, the project will:

  • Unite all neuro-disciplines in a singular building.
  • Be designed without departments to allow health professionals and researchers to work collaboratively and fuel discovery in new ways.
  • Focus on translational health and knowledge transfer, organizing spaces to bring research and clinician teams closer together to improve overall health outcomes.

Designed by the Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign (Los Angeles), the 350,000-square-foot project will house 145 patient beds and include operating rooms, a radiology/imaging suite, intensive care unit beds, a rehabilitation center, emergency department, and an outpatient care center. Additionally, the project includes a wing that houses commercial and development partners to conduct research in collaboration with institute clinicians focused on neurologic health.

The building offers a unitized curtain wall system for its exterior façade with alternating vertical metal panels and insulated glass units that vary in width depending on the amount of privacy and natural light needed. The building also embraces the outdoors with access and views of outdoor rooftop gardens and connections to the surrounding trails and woodland campus.
